Global container shipments grew 4.4% in the first quarter of 2026 despite significant disruptions from the US Supreme Court ruling on tariffs, Middle East conflict and the Strait of Hormuz closure, according to industry data.
The Hormuz blockade triggered a sharp decline in Middle East exports, prompting carriers to reroute cargo through alternative hubs including Jeddah, Khor Fakkan and Salalah. Asia-Europe trades and secondary routes to sub-Saharan Africa showed sustained strength amid the volatility.
European export performance remained challenged throughout the quarter. Meanwhile, US sourcing patterns continued shifting away from China, raising questions about the permanence of supply chain diversification.
Peak season dynamics shifted markedly as shippers adapted to ongoing instability. Industry observers note the Red Sea's return to normal operations remains uncertain heading into Q2.
