Canadian Pacific Kansas City received a strike notice May 27 from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Roughly 300 signals and communications workers across Canada are set to walk off the job Sunday unless a deal materializes. The union secured a 96% strike mandate, citing compensation gaps, employee expense reimbursement disputes and demanding on-call schedules as flashpoints. IBEW said retention has deteriorated as experienced workers migrate to competing railways and employers offering superior pay and working conditions. The union characterized management as unwilling to seriously consider key wage proposals despite months of negotiation and completion of federally mandated conciliation. CPKC countered that its offers match existing union contracts across Canada and expressed confidence in reaching settlement. The railroad said it prepared contingency plans ensuring continued service and safe operations if workers strike. Negotiations continue through the weekend.
