Daimler Truck North America said the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed amendments to nitrogen oxide regulations will have the most significant impact on customer costs through relaxed emissions warranty requirements. The company unveiled its Detroit 6 engine at its proving ground in Oregon's High Desert region. The engine is engineered to meet the incoming 0.035 brake horsepower-hour NoX standard. Daimler officials confirmed the engine complies with regulations regardless of how EPA amendments proceed. The revised rule replaces a 10-year/450,000-mile warranty with a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty, a change the trucking sector broadly supported. Dan Potter, manager of product compliance and regulatory affairs, said the warranty change will have the biggest bottom-line impact for customers. The EPA also proposed revising diesel exhaust fluid deratement procedures, replacing engine slowdown penalties with warning systems. The comment period for amendments closed in late August.
