Coretura, the 50-50 joint venture between Daimler Truck and Volvo Group, is standardizing how heavy trucks manage onboard computing systems. The goal is to simplify software updates after vehicles leave manufacturing plants. Modern trucks carry 100 to 150 small computers, creating logistical nightmares for software maintenance. The Gothenburg-based company proposes consolidating these units to two high-performance computers: one handling advanced driver assistance and safety functions, the other managing infotainment, with vehicle control placed based on computational demand. This architecture would reduce update targets to roughly 40 units. Coretura positions itself as a truck operating system layer, leaving truckmakers and third-party vendors to develop applications above it. CEO Johan Lundén emphasized safety-critical systems require isolation from routine updates, distinguishing trucks from consumer devices where software failures carry minimal consequences.
