Congressional Democrats on Friday condemned reports of a potential $1.7 billion settlement in President Donald Trump's lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, characterizing it as an abuse of taxpayer resources.

Trump, his two eldest sons, and his family business sued the IRS and Treasury Department over the 2019 leak of the president's tax returns. The original lawsuit sought $10 billion in damages.

Under the reported settlement terms, the compensation fund could benefit Trump allies who claim they were wrongfully targeted during the previous administration. Senate Finance Committee Democrats called the arrangement a "slush fund" and accused the administration of shaking down American taxpayers.

The settlement would allow Trump to drop the lawsuit without judicial review of its merits.
