General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis have eliminated more than 20,000 salaried positions, representing 19% of their combined white-collar workforces, according to company employment data and public filings. The job cuts reflect industry transformation driven by software-defined vehicles, autonomous capabilities, electric powertrains and, most recently, artificial intelligence.

GM has led the reduction, cutting approximately 11,000 U.S. salaried workers since 2022 after expanding from 48,000 to 58,000 positions between 2020 and 2022. The automaker this week laid off between 500 and 600 salaried employees globally, primarily in information technology operations in Texas and Michigan.

Ford has reduced salaried headcount by roughly 5,300 workers from its 2020 peak to approximately 30,700 positions. Stellantis has scaled back from 15,000 salaried workers in 2020.
