DHL Expands Cologne Parcel Hub to 50,000-Unit Hourly Capacity

DHL Group opened an expanded parcel sorting facility in Cologne-Eifeltor on Tuesday, raising the center's processing capacity to nearly 50,000 pieces per hour. The expansion will add 250 jobs, bringing total employment at the site to 750 workers. The facility now matches the sorting throughput of the company's Bochum parcel center, the previous largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Only DHL's Aschheim facility near Munich, handling approximately 72,000 parcels hourly, exceeds Cologne's capacity nationwide. Construction began in 2024 and completed on schedule this summer. The new building connects to the existing center via bridge. DHL's Post & Parcel division is investing more than 1 billion euros per year over several years to modernize its network as e-commerce volumes grow. The expansion incorporates energy-efficient systems including rooftop solar panels, automated ventilation controls, and demand-based LED lighting.
