Disney submitted renewal applications Thursday for eight broadcast station licenses following an expedited Federal Communications Commission review launched months ahead of schedule. The company filed the applications under protest, characterizing the FCC's order as unlawful and unconstitutional. The FCC initiated the early renewal process in late April citing concerns about Disney's diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. The eight stations' licenses were not originally scheduled for renewal until between 2028 and 2031. The FCC began investigating Disney and other media companies last year for potential violations of the Communications Act of 1934 and regulations prohibiting unlawful discrimination. The agency determined in April that further action was warranted. Disney faced a Thursday filing deadline for the accelerated renewal process.
