The Department of Transportation announced 14 new truck parking projects Wednesday under the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects program, totaling more than 2,400 new spaces nationwide.
The largest single project will add 500 parking spots across Tennessee, split between Nashville and Knoxville areas. The Greater Nashville Regional Council received just under $24 million to construct facilities at five Pilot Travel Center locations along Interstate 40 and Interstate 24.
A second major initiative will create 305 spaces in Los Indios, Texas, near the Brownsville border crossing with Mexico. That project includes reconstruction of approximately 0.35 miles of local road access to a new parking area at the Los Indios Port of Entry.
The DOT emphasized the funding targets the nation's chronic shortage of commercial motor vehicle parking, aiming to reduce driver fatigue-related accidents and improve supply chain efficiency along critical freight corridors.
