DP World is pursuing operations of Chittagong Container Terminal in addition to its longstanding interest in the New Mooring Container Terminal, according to Bangladesh government officials and industry sources. The UAE-based port operator submitted the proposal last month during a Bangladesh-UAE Public Private Partnership Platform meeting in Dubai. DP World has pursued opportunities in Bangladesh since 2019, when it proposed a $1 billion investment in the country's port infrastructure. The company seeks long-term leases for both NCT and CCT, which operate adjacent to each other at Chittagong Port. DP World also plans to invest in an inland container depot in Gazipur and develop the proposed Bay Container Terminal. The company intends to digitize port operations as well. Bangladesh is opening its ports to foreign operators as part of sector liberalization. However, NCT operations have faced sustained opposition from port workers and political activists over the past two years.
