A commercial driver has filed a petition with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration seeking mandatory carbon monoxide detectors in trucks. The request cites fatality risks during rest periods. Driver Todd Daum framed the petition as a safety measure to prevent poisoning deaths and injuries among operators sleeping in cabs. The petition comes as the trucking industry navigates multiple operational challenges. Container gateway volumes remain elevated at major U.S. ports, with Houston handling record cargo throughput as import activity persists. Meanwhile, trucking companies have announced pay increases for 2026, responding to driver compensation pressures. The FMCSA has also moved to modernize regulations, recently granting Level 4 autonomous vehicle operators exemptions to replace traditional warning triangles with cab-mounted beacons under a five-year waiver.
