Eli Lilly advanced its next-generation obesity treatment toward regulatory approval Thursday after a late-stage trial showed significant weight reduction across patient groups. The weekly injection retatrutide demonstrated superior efficacy compared to existing competitors, with the highest dose producing average weight loss of 28.3 pounds over 80 weeks. Approximately 45 percent of 2,500 trial participants achieved 30 percent or greater weight loss. In an extended study, patients with a body mass index of 35 or above achieved 30.3 percent average weight reduction over 104 weeks. The mechanism differs from current injectable and oral options from Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea and diarrhea, occurred at higher rates, particularly at maximum doses. Lower dose formulations showed fewer discontinuations due to side effects. According to Lilly's chief scientific and product officer, the 30 percent weight loss threshold has historically been associated only with bariatric surgery.
