A European Union prohibition on Brazilian beef exports is threatening to disrupt Latin American shipments to Europe just as the trade corridor showed signs of recovery in 2026.
The ban, effective September 2026, targets Brazil's failure to provide adequate documentation that livestock producers are not using excessive antimicrobial agents for growth promotion. The restriction extends beyond beef to aquaculture, eggs, honey, horses, and poultry products.
Brazil's removal from the EU's compliant countries list caught shippers off guard after consecutive months of volume growth between the regions. Forwarders expressed concern despite optimism that Brazilian authorities could demonstrate compliance and reverse the decision.
Brazil exports more beef globally than any other nation, according to industry sources. EU health officials stated the ban could be lifted once compliance is demonstrated, indicating ongoing negotiations between authorities.
