The European Union is preparing a new trade enforcement mechanism that would deny market access to rival nations engaging in economic aggression against the bloc, according to people familiar with the initiative.

The tool would protect the 27-member bloc's economy from coordinated attacks on critical sectors or infrastructure.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Sefčovič traveled to Beijing last week to meet with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, signaling that Brussels is maintaining diplomatic engagement despite rising trade tensions. The talks reveal the tension between deterrence and commercial relationships with major trading partners.

The proposed mechanism would function as a complete embargo of EU market privileges, effectively cutting off access to one of the world's largest consumer markets. Officials indicated the tool would only activate in response to severe economic threats, though specific trigger thresholds remain under review.
