EU Import Levies Trigger Sharp Drop in Freighter Capacity to Europe

New European Union fees on low-value ecommerce shipments have compressed Asia-Europe freighter capacity by 14% in June, equating to approximately 18 fewer widebody freighter flights daily into the continent.

Major European cargo hubs experienced significant volume declines. Liège airport recorded a 16% drop, while Milan Malpensa fell 24%. Schiphol declined 12%, and Budapest experienced the steepest reduction at 46%.

Milan Bergamo Airport reported a 40% contraction in ecommerce cargo movements, reflecting increased costs dampening cross-border shipment demand. Italy postponed its additional €2 levy on ecommerce items valued below €150 until October, a move officials said prevented further market deterioration.

Industry observers expect the market will eventually rebalance as shippers adjust to the new cost structure.
