The FBI's Memphis Cargo Theft Task Force has shifted its focus from traditional warehouse and truck robberies to cyber schemes that target freight before shipments leave loading docks. The task force, which evolved from the Auto Cargo Theft Task Force around 2008, now coordinates with Memphis Police and Shelby County Sheriff's Office to combat interstate cargo crimes. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jeremy Baker said modern thieves use computer intrusions and social engineering to identify high-value shipments before attempting pickups. Criminals exploit stolen shipment data to create fraudulent pickups that appear legitimate to employees. The cyber-enabled approach allows thieves to execute thefts remotely before drivers arrive. Baker noted that perpetrators can secure millions in merchandise through digital means alone, reducing physical theft to a final step.
