Federal Reserve policymakers remain divided over whether higher interest rates are necessary to combat persistent inflation. Some officials argue for immediate action, while others say current policy settings remain restrictive enough.
Former Reserve Bank of India chief Raghuram Rajan, serving on a task force examining US monetary policy, joined calls for rate increases to contain accelerating price pressures. Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack stated the central bank must act soon, contending that current rates are insufficient to cool inflation running above the Fed's 2% target.
Boston Federal Reserve President Susan Collins countered that existing policy continues restraining economic activity. This disagreement reflects ongoing uncertainty among policymakers about whether the Fed's current stance effectively addresses inflation without hampering growth.
