Richmond Federal Reserve President Thomas Barkin signaled Thursday that additional interest rate increases lie ahead, though the central bank will proceed cautiously given ongoing economic uncertainty. Speaking at the Richmond Fed's 2026 CFO Summit, Barkin noted that near-record low unemployment paired with elevated inflation creates a clear rationale for tightening monetary policy. The question remains how quickly to act.
Barkin favors a gradual approach, citing the value of accumulating economic data before making further moves. He characterized current policy as close to neutral—neither restricting nor stimulating growth. Inflation represents the most pressing concern for policymakers, Barkin said. He added that September's quarter-point rate increase should begin tempering price pressures.
While not currently a voting member of the rate-setting committee, Barkin will join in 2027.
