A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. is set to hear arguments on Tuesday in Anthropic's lawsuit challenging the Department of Defense's designation of the company as a supply chain risk. The three-judge panel will give the Justice Department and Anthropic each 15 minutes to present arguments. The case stems from the Pentagon's March blacklisting, which requires defense contractors to certify they will not use Anthropic's Claude models in military work. The designation followed collapsed negotiations between the two parties. The DOD sought unrestricted access to Anthropic's models for all lawful military purposes, while Anthropic demanded safeguards against fully autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance applications. The Pentagon has continued using Anthropic's technology for military operations.
