Federal enforcement sweep nets 86 arrests, 766 out-of-service orders across Midwest

A three-day commercial vehicle enforcement operation in July resulted in 86 truck driver arrests and 766 out-of-service orders. The Department of Homeland Security and Department of Transportation conducted roadside inspections across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio, targeting unqualified drivers, unsafe vehicles and fraudulent licensing practices along major freight corridors. The operation, the second phase of a sustained federal initiative, also led to recovery of nearly $1 million in stolen cargo and the detention of 51 immigrants and 21 non-domiciled CDL holders. Inspectors identified 36 English-language proficiency violations. The first phase, conducted in Florida in March, yielded 176 out-of-service orders and 35 criminal arrests. Since 2025, federal agencies have placed more than 26,000 drivers out of service for language deficiencies, revoked over 30,000 improperly issued licenses and shut down approximately 8,000 allegedly fraudulent CDL schools.
