The U.S. Department of Transportation announced a $217 million investment Monday to overhaul licensing and safety systems across the trucking and bus industries. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will distribute the funding to target technology upgrades and workforce development while cracking down on fraudulent operators. A substantial portion addresses state commercial driver's license modernization efforts, ensuring proper training and licensing of heavy truck drivers while eliminating corruption in licensing pipelines. The funding flows through four grant programs: the High Priority Commercial Motor Vehicle Grant focusing on safety in crash corridors and hazardous materials transport; the Commercial Driver's License Program Implementation Grant supporting state CDL network modernization; the High Priority Innovative Technology Development Grant funding roadside inspection and law enforcement technology; and the Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training Grant providing career training tuition for military veterans and civilians entering commercial driving.
