A federal monitoring program overseeing the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will conclude following a joint motion filed by the union and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. The arrangement stems from a 1989 consent decree with roots in 1988 actions, targeting organized crime influence within the union and ensuring fair, democratic member-controlled elections. The revised final order requires judicial approval. Teamsters President Sean O'Brien, elected in 2021 and re-elected at the union's Las Vegas convention last week, cited the organization's establishment of rigorous internal controls and member complaint investigation procedures. The original government complaint alleged La Cosa Nostra operatives, working with union officials, had seized control to conduct racketeering activities including mail fraud, embezzlement, bribery and murder, using intimidation and violence against members.
