FedEx is committing $54 million to expand its truck terminal in Duiven, Netherlands, as part of a broader strategy to capture greater market share in premium international air cargo. The project will increase palletized freight handling capacity by more than 50% and add 65 dock doors, bringing total docking spaces to 265.
The expansion supports FedEx's restructured air network, which now operates separate express parcel and deferred freight segments to optimize aircraft efficiency. A portion of FedEx's airline now operates an international daytime schedule to carry heavier freight unsuitable for express networks, enabling truck-fly-truck delivery models. This integrated approach targets high-margin shipments including pharmaceuticals, perishables, electronics and automotive components.
FedEx targets the premium air freight market, which represents $22 billion of the broader $90 billion deferred air cargo market. The company currently holds 12% share of the premium segment. The enhanced European road infrastructure allows intercontinental air freight to move efficiently across the continent by truck, complementing air operations.
