Finnair Cargo has deployed fibre-based AirCargoRunners to replace traditional wooden structural components on aircraft pallets, yielding measurable operational and environmental gains. The lighter carton-based solution maintains load stability while reducing weight across unit load devices, enabling improved cargo optimization without altering handling procedures. On a single 14-hour long-haul flight, one equipped pallet generates approximately 0.6 tonnes of emissions reductions and 35 kilograms of fuel savings. When scaled to annual operations with one flight per day, potential annual results include 219 tonnes of emission reductions, 12.7 tonnes of fuel savings, and cost reductions exceeding €13,000. With three daily flights using the technology, potential annual emissions cuts reach 657 tonnes and fuel cost savings surpass €40,000. The implementation reflects broader industry momentum toward weight optimization as a practical efficiency lever.
