GE Appliances' Roper Corp. facility in LaFayette, Georgia has deployed an app-based flexible scheduling system to address severe staffing gaps. The initiative attracts more than 900 workers to its labor pool, allowing employees to select four-hour shifts week-to-week and choose their work assignments, from assembly line positions to quality control roles. The model has proven particularly effective in recruiting workers seeking part-time arrangements rather than traditional full-time employment. Ruth Ransom, 68, exemplifies the approach's appeal—the retired grandmother opted for quality control work over physically demanding line positions. GE Appliances adopted the flexible framework during the pandemic when surging appliance demand collided with workforce shortages. Stanley Black & Decker and Georgia-Pacific have similarly embraced flexible scheduling strategies to compete for available labor in tight manufacturing markets.
