Florida's attorney general has issued a subpoena to the National Football League over its Rooney Rule, escalating efforts to challenge the league's diversity hiring requirement. James Uthmeier argues the policy violates state anti-discrimination law. The Rooney Rule, adopted in 2003, mandates that teams interview at least two people of color or women for head coach and general manager positions, and at least one for quarterback coach and other senior roles. The requirement emerged from longstanding concerns about limited opportunities for Black coaches in a league with predominantly Black players. The Trump administration's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has challenged similar diversity policies across industries. While critics including coaches, the Players Association and fans question the rule's effectiveness, it remains in effect. The legal action marks the latest corporate target in ongoing backlash against diversity initiatives.
