The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is advancing regulatory flexibility initiatives after completing preliminary testing this year. Six-week trial runs tested the Flexible Sleeper Berth and Split Duty Period programs. Nine drivers from three separate carriers participated in each pre-test. The FMCSA will use data collected during these initial phases to inform final parameters before broader implementation in 2027. Industry observers expect the scheduling flexibility could help address ongoing capacity constraints. The programs may improve driver retention and quality-of-life standards. Carriers have signaled interest in regulatory adjustments as competition for experienced drivers intensifies amid shifting market conditions.
