A technical issue within the FMCSA's SafeSpect compliance platform has triggered unexpected new entrant safety audits for hundreds of established trucking companies across multiple states. The North Carolina Trucking Association identified the problem after at least 400 carriers in the state received erroneous audit notifications despite operating for years or decades. Ben Greenberg, the association's president and CEO, warned members Tuesday that ignoring the notices could jeopardize operating authority. The SafeSpect system tracks commercial motor vehicle safety data and driver compliance. It appears to have misclassified long-standing carriers following a recent update, though the exact technical cause remains unknown. FMCSA and state highway patrol officials are investigating the issue, which extends beyond North Carolina. Industry officials expect resolution soon.
