Motor carriers and independent truckers are encountering a surge in trailer rental fraud schemes. These scams mirror broader supply chain theft trends, with criminals advertising discounted trailer leases through social media platforms. They communicate exclusively via text and messaging apps to avoid detection. The scams typically advance quickly from initial contact to a fabricated rental agreement bearing a legitimate leasing company's branding.

The rise in trailer fraud coincides with a dramatic escalation in cargo theft nationwide. Strategic theft schemes, where fraudsters impersonate legitimate carriers to divert shipments, have increased 1,500% since 2021 and now represent approximately one-third of all supply chain thefts. Direct losses from cargo theft reach nearly $725 million annually, though total economic impact including supply chain disruption exceeds $35 billion.

Owner-operators should verify rental agreements directly with companies and avoid conducting business solely through messaging platforms.
