Freight Hero, a Durham, North Carolina startup, has secured $5 million in seed funding led by Field Ventures, with participation from Flybridge Capital, Tip Top VC and Front Porch Venture Partners. The company's total funding now exceeds $6 million. Rather than selling software, Freight Hero operates freight broker back offices on a flat fee-per-load model, managing shipments from rate confirmation through proof of delivery. The company handles exceptions that automated systems cannot resolve, employing human operators for complex cases like upset drivers or data discrepancies. CEO André Luis Martins Filho argues the industry's mistake is selling technology rather than results. A survey of 187 brokerage professionals found 41% are adopting AI or machine learning tools, while 48% are not.
