Freight sector bankruptcy filings surge as carriers, logistics firms seek restructuring

At least 21 transportation and logistics companies filed for bankruptcy protection between late July and Aug. 25, underscoring financial strain across the freight economy. The filings span trucking operators, freight forwarders, distributors and warehouse operators nationwide. Financial distress is affecting both single-truck carriers and large regional distributors. BFG, an Indianapolis-based horticultural and agricultural supplier, sought Chapter 11 protection with assets and liabilities between $100 million and $500 million. The company operates 15 warehouses nationally and employed approximately 454 workers as of April. Smaller carriers also struggled. Anchor South Transport, an Alabama-based operator with 14 trucks, filed for Chapter 11 with $1.4 million in assets against $2.2 million in liabilities. Georgia-based Black Lion Transportation filed for Chapter 11 protection with assets and liabilities between $100,001 and $500,000. Financial hardship remains uneven across freight operations, hitting both small trucking companies and larger logistics businesses.
