FTAI Aviation and Aeronautical Engineers are combining capabilities to scale Boeing 737-800 passenger-to-freighter conversions while reducing costs. FTAI will supply CFM56 engines and leverage its aftermarket maintenance expertise, while AEI brings conversion technology to the partnership. The 737-800, with nearly 6,000 aircraft delivered historically, represents the most prolific narrowbody ever built. AEI has developed more than 130 Supplemental Type Certificates and modified over 625 aircraft—more conversions than any competitor. The collaboration addresses a market gap by providing cargo-optimized engines designed for freight economics rather than passenger operations. FTAI President David Moreno said the partnership enables lower operating costs through engines customized for cargo cycles. AEI previously announced plans for a 737-900ER freighter variant with 206 cubic meters of capacity and 26-tonne payload, targeting 2029 certification.
