Diesel price volatility has emerged as the freight industry's most pressing concern in 2026, displacing broader economic worries that dominated carrier discussions a year ago, according to research from the American Transportation Research Institute.
Rising fuel expenses are compounding operational pressures across the sector. Werner Enterprises attributed a third-quarter profit warning to elevated diesel costs alongside persistent driver compensation demands and increased insurance claims.
The challenge extends beyond individual carriers. Regional fuel price spikes, particularly in California where diesel exceeds $8 per gallon, are pressuring shippers and logistics providers to absorb unexpected costs. Energy analysts warn that elevated pricing could extend well into next year.
The driver shortage has resurged as a secondary concern, creating additional margin pressure on carriers. Fleets are reassessing pricing strategies and operational efficiency as a result.
