The Gateway Development Commission awarded a $711.7 million contract June 1 to Skanska Creamer Sanzari NJSA JV. The contract covers construction of surface infrastructure supporting the Hudson Tunnel Project's New Jersey Surface Alignment work. The project spans 1.5 miles of new construction between Secaucus and the tunnel portal at Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen. It will prepare the corridor for future tracks connecting a new Hudson River rail tunnel to the existing Northeast Corridor. Construction includes 4,170 feet of retaining walls, lightweight concrete fill for embankments adjacent to current NEC tracks, and 3,150 feet of viaduct carrying new tracks over Meadowlands wetlands. An evaluation panel of technical experts and representatives from GDC, New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and New York State selected the contractor following a competitive process. The contract incorporates seven alternative technical concepts designed to reduce costs and environmental impacts while improving long-term maintenance.
