Generation Z now accounts for nearly half of all online betting activity, surpassing millennials for the first time. This milestone occurred during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to recent market analysis. A retail investor survey found 66% of Gen Z participate in sports betting, with many viewing wagers as financial investments despite consistently losing money on these platforms. The expansion of prediction markets in early 2025 extended betting access to states without legalized sportsbooks and to those under 21. Since a 2018 Supreme Court decision permitted state-authorized sportsbooks, the market has spread to 30 states. Clinical professionals report rising gambling addiction cases among young people, particularly among those experiencing significant losses. Financial advisors warn that attempting to recover losses deepens financial hardship and increases mental health risks.
