Georgia Seizes 1,800 Pounds of Marijuana Bound for Atlanta, Orlando

Butts County authorities intercepted approximately 1,800 pounds of marijuana Tuesday morning originating from Sacramento, California. The shipment targeted Atlanta and Orlando, with roughly half destined for Atlanta and the remainder for Orlando. Sheriff Gary Long announced the seizure, using the case to highlight persistent illicit cannabis trafficking across state lines despite legalization efforts elsewhere. Long warned that criminal organizations continue supplying illegal marijuana despite legal markets in neighboring states. He noted that licensed businesses face taxes, licensing fees, testing requirements and regulatory costs that underground operators avoid. This allows illegal sellers to undercut legitimate competitors. The sheriff cautioned Georgia lawmakers against treating legalization as a comprehensive solution, citing unsuccessful efforts in Colorado and California to eliminate black market activity through regulatory changes. Long urged state policymakers to study those jurisdictions before considering similar measures.
