Airfreight rates climbed 4.7% during the week ending October 19, with the global Baltic Air Freight Index reaching levels 26.4% higher than a year ago. These rates surpass the previous two peak seasons. Middle East conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war have kept rates elevated; TAC noted rates were already starting from elevated levels due to these disruptions. Jet fuel prices jumped 113.7% year-on-year through October 16, establishing a floor for carrier pricing. China-US lanes led gains, particularly from Hong Kong and Shanghai. European routes showed mixed results, with Frankfurt outbound falling 6.6% week-on-week but up 33% annually, while London Heathrow dipped 2.3% weekly yet remained 35% above year-ago levels. North American rates firmed on Asia and South America routes, though transatlantic lanes weakened. Mexico-Europe rates posted significant weekly gains.
