Manufacturing activity accelerated globally in recent months as producers moved to secure inventory ahead of anticipated price increases and supply disruptions. UK factories expanded at their fastest pace in four years, with producers prioritizing forward purchasing to hedge against inflation and logistical challenges from Middle East tensions. China's industrial sector showed similarly robust momentum, with industrial profits climbing 24.7% in April—the strongest gain in more than two years—fueled by stronger export demand and higher producer prices. Air cargo demand returned to growth in April following a March decline, with cargo traffic increasing 4% year-over-year. Despite pockets of softening in May's official manufacturing data, private surveys indicated underlying demand remained resilient, suggesting the production surge reflects genuine supply chain repositioning rather than sustained demand growth.
