The $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge will officially open July 27. This follows an agreement between Canada, Michigan and the federal government on toll governance that resolves a contentious months-long dispute. The six-lane crossing linking Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, represents one of North America's most significant freight infrastructure projects in decades. The bridge is expected to strengthen continental supply chains by offering a second major truck route between Interstate 75 in Michigan and Ontario's Highway 401, bypassing congestion points at the century-old Ambassador Bridge. The revised toll agreement gives the United States 50% of toll revenue profits and authority to veto toll increases exceeding 10% above current rates. A 15-year regional economic development fund financed through bridge operating profits was also established. The opening provides critical additional capacity at the continent's busiest commercial land border crossing.
