The $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge will officially open July 27 following a resolution to months of negotiations between Canada, Michigan and the federal government over toll governance. The six-lane crossing linking Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, represents a major expansion of North American freight infrastructure and addresses capacity constraints at the busiest commercial land border crossing on the continent. The new route connects Interstate 75 in Michigan to Ontario's Highway 401, bypassing congestion around existing crossings. Under the agreement, the U.S. receives 50% of toll revenue profits and authority to veto toll increases exceeding 10%. The accord also establishes a 15-year regional economic development fund financed through bridge operating profits. The opening resolves months of uncertainty and supports the long-standing advocacy by trade stakeholders and manufacturers for a second crossing to strengthen integrated North American supply chains.
