Pharmaceutical stocks experienced an intraday surge following the World Health Organization's May 2 alert about a hantavirus outbreak. The outbreak was linked to passengers aboard the MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged expedition cruise operating in the Atlantic. Moderna, Inovio, and Novavax all climbed in early trading but failed to sustain gains. Moderna disclosed it has conducted preclinical research on hantaviruses in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, characterizing the work as early-stage efforts aligned with the company's responsibility to develop countermeasures against emerging pathogens. Analysts at Evercore ISI cautioned that meaningful revenue opportunities from hantavirus vaccine development remain unlikely. Health authorities emphasize the public health risk remains low, with human transmission of the rodent-borne respiratory disease occurring rarely.
