Hapag-Lloyd's bid to acquire Zim has encountered a significant setback after Israel's Government Companies Authority terminated its review of the proposed deal structure. The regulator declared the current framework invalid, requiring all parties to restart the approval process from the beginning. The GCA, which holds the state's Golden Share in Zim, will not accept any resubmission until it receives approval from Zim, financial institution FIMI, and Hapag-Lloyd. The German carrier had planned to submit a substantially revised proposal following political opposition to earlier structures. A critical October 6 deadline now looms for resubmission. Failure to meet this deadline will trigger another complete regulatory review. The setback threatens to jeopardize the February 2027 closure target for the transaction.
