The fastest-growing segment in air cargo faces an unexpected bottleneck as Middle East disruptions tighten helium supplies. Helium is critical to data center operations and cooling advanced computing systems. Data center components now represent 1.4 million tonnes of annual air cargo volume—roughly 5% of the global market—following 39% year-on-year growth tied to AI infrastructure expansion, according to Aevean Consultancy. Helium shortages pose greater risks than traditional fuel price volatility, cautioned Cargolux Chief Executive Richard Forson. The carrier has identified server rack transportation as one of its fastest-growing freight categories. Semiconductor suppliers report surging demand for high-performance components. South Korea's SK Hynix noted robust demand paired with constrained supply in first-quarter results. Taiwan's TSMC warned AI-related chip demand remains exceptionally strong, with supply constraints expected through 2027.
