Just 10% of drivers identified as highest-risk account for 47% of all crashes, according to new research examining safety patterns across commercial fleets. The analysis reveals that 30% of drivers are responsible for more than three-fourths of crashes, highlighting the importance of targeted coaching and intervention strategies. The study examined how multiple driving behaviors compound to elevate crash risk rather than occurring in isolation. Drivers using mobile phones showed 2.7 times greater likelihood of falling into the highest-risk category. When mobile phone use combined with harsh braking, that likelihood jumped to 5 times. The addition of distracted driving pushed the figure to 5.4 times. The findings suggest fleet managers can improve safety outcomes by concentrating resources on a concentrated group of high-risk operators.
