Freight theft schemes are exploiting vulnerabilities between brokers and carriers through carrier impersonation and load interception, prompting calls for industry-wide data standards. Highway, which provides carrier identity and vetting tools to roughly 1,500 brokers, argues no single vendor can address these gaps alone. The company guarantees $100,000 per stolen load for brokers following its recommendations. Under the guarantee, Highway has covered one million loads and experienced one theft. Highway identifies five parties involved in freight movement—brokers, carriers, insurance agents, factoring companies and telematics providers—yet none bear accountability when theft occurs. The company launched Highway Certified Insurance Agencies in June with 10 founding members. These agencies commit to accurate coverage documentation and timely policy change notifications. The initiative aims to close data disclosure failures that currently allow policy cancellations and coverage gaps to go undetected.
