The freight industry faces a fundamental transformation in combating cargo theft. Identity verification tools have made carrier impersonation increasingly difficult, shifting threats from double-brokering fraud to direct theft by established operators.
The challenge now centers on identifying when legitimate carriers turn to theft. Highway monitors 5 million loads monthly and detects suspicious patterns: small fleets suddenly booking unusually high volumes, unfamiliar carriers entering high-value commodity corridors, and rapid increases in user additions. Geographic analysis of facilities and traffic lanes helps identify carriers entering new markets without established history.
Carrier verification requires facial recognition, real-name confirmation without VPN masking, and vehicle identification number matching against electronic logging device records. Data feed integrity standards have become critical, with Highway beginning to shut off feeds from providers that fail verification requirements.
