House Democrats demanded Thursday that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick resign. They alleged he misrepresented his relationship with notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in public statements. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform's Democratic minority said Lutnick lied to the American people and failed to be forthcoming during a closed-door congressional interview. In a 2025 interview, Lutnick claimed he severed ties with Epstein after 2005, stating he avoided the financier entirely. However, Epstein files released by the Department of Justice revealed continued contact. Lutnick later acknowledged attending lunch with Epstein and his family on the financier's private island in 2012. The 21 Democratic committee members characterized his lack of candor as disqualifying for his cabinet position. Lutnick denied misleading lawmakers during the private interview.
