Houston is capturing growing container volumes as major West Coast ports experience softening demand following a robust 2025. Los Angeles and Long Beach have both posted volume declines of roughly 1 percent, while Houston bookings jumped 7 percent in mid-March alone.
Changing warehousing patterns, direct-to-consumer fulfillment strategies and revised trans-Pacific service routing are driving cargo increasingly toward East Coast and Gulf Coast gateways. Port improvements allowing larger and heavier vessel calls have positioned Houston to capitalize on the trend.
Market conditions are tightening heading into summer. Carriers blanked sailings around China's May Day holiday, creating firmer capacity dynamics. Global trade disruptions persist, including vessel congestion in Europe, South American export bottlenecks and Middle East instability affecting key shipping corridors.
