Cook County authorities intercepted a semi-truck carrying 41,336 pounds of glycerin destined for Thornton, Illinois, after detecting a sophisticated freight theft scheme. Criminals had cloned shipping documentation for the $60,000 load originating in Hammond, Indiana. They attempted to redirect 75 drums of USP/FCC-grade glycerin to an unauthorized cross-docking facility. The Organized Retail Crime and Cargo Theft Task Force received intelligence alerting them to the suspected theft. Detectives obtained the bill of lading and tracked the commercial vehicle through Thornton, conducting a traffic stop before cargo could be unloaded or distributed. All merchandise was secured and returned to its lawful owners. Preliminary investigation indicates the driver was unaware of the criminal operation and did not knowingly participate. Authorities believe offenders manipulated legitimate transportation system details to create an authentic-appearing transaction. This marks another instance of increasingly complex cargo theft tactics in the region.
