Incheon Port Pursues Expanded Container Networks in Southeast Asia

Incheon Port Authority is moving to establish stronger container shipping connections with Port Klang and Indian ports following significant declines in Middle East trade flows. Officials from IPA and South Korean carriers HMM, KMTC Line, and Namsung Shipping recently visited both facilities to explore partnership opportunities. Port Klang-Incheon cargo volumes fell 34% last year and dropped another 13% in the first five months of 2026. The Malaysian port offers South Korean exporters a cost-effective transhipment hub with rates running 30-40% below competitors. As a Southeast Asia gateway, Port Klang provides access to extensive feeder networks serving multiple Asian markets without requiring direct port calls. The route proves especially valuable for battery exports and goods destined for South and Southeast Asian markets amid regional port congestion.
